About Stop for Maya

Stop For Maya
is a 501(c)3 non-profit founded in the memory of Maya Hirsch, a four year old girl who was killed in Chicago in May 2006 by a driver who ignored a stop sign at a busy crosswalk. Stop For Maya is committed to advocating for pedestrian and bicyclist safety in and around the city of Chicago and to raising awareness of the need for all drivers to obey basic traffic safety laws.

Stop For Maya is eager to share resources with our partner agencies, and is equally committed to engaging children in the process of making the city safer for those on foot. Your generous contributions allow us to continue this important work. Thank you!

Partnership with Children's Memorial Hospital
The Stop for Maya Foundation generously sponsors Children’s Memorial Hospital Heartlight Bereavement Program. The program has been a guiding presence for families seeking a safe and nurturing place to share their experiences and begin the process of healing following the death of a child.

Helping families find hope, strength and consistency during a time of emotional upheaval is only one part of Heartlight’s multi-faceted work. The Stop for Maya Foundation recognizes that in order to continue Heartlight’s services, special resources and support are needed.

Your contribution will help develop programming to support the unique needs of medical providers, so they are better able to care for trauma victims and their families, and cope with their own emotional struggles

Make a Commitment to Safety
No amount of legislation could ever be enough to erase the pain of Maya’s death. More needs to be done to protect pedestrians from careless driving habits, and to prevent future tragedies.

How You Can Help
Donations have helped establish the Stop for Maya Foundation as a grant making institution, that has raised thousands of dollars to date, supporting causes throughout the Chicagoland area that make a difference in lives of victims’ families and pedestrians. The Stop for Maya Foundation works with Children’s Memorial Hospital Heartlight Bereavement Program to offer support and a safe place for families coping with the death of a child.
